“I grew up a fundamentalist in North Carolina,” said Bishop John Shelby Spong in a recent phone interview from his home in Morris Township, New Jersey. “My alcoholic father died when I was 12 years old and fundamentalism gave me security. “That religion taught me that segregation was the will of God and quoted the bible to prove it, that it was OK to hate other religions and quoted the bible to prove it, that homosexuality was depraved and quoted the bible to prove it. It’s killing Christianity.” Full story.
